Our Mission

The Harvard Center for Biological Imaging was opened May 17, 2010 and is one of the most innovative biological imaging centers in the world.  In order to ensure investigators always have access to the latest and best technologies, the HCBI was designed to be an “Evergreen” microscopy facility. Imaging systems at the HCBI are leased rather than purchased and replaced every 2-3 years. This ensures that the facility remains relevant and is never in possession of outdated equipment. Currently, the HCBI contains a variety of microscopes including confocal, super-resolution, multi-photon, lightsheet, live cell imaging, high-content screening, slide scanning, laser dissection and macroscopy. The facility also features wet lab space, eukaryotic and prokaryotic incubation, and access to nearby animal care facilities for a wide range of species, and extensive IT infrastructure and software for image analysis.

Facility Access Steps

  1. Obtain a Research & Computing Account
    • Select Shanna DeBlick as your PI
    • Select Connor Crowley as your Approver
  2. Complete the Project Registration Form and email the following documents to Connor Crowley
  3. Upon project approval, Connor will help you obtain a Harvard ID Card
    • NOTE: If you are on campus more than 4hours/week you will need to contact Doug Richardson to enroll in the Harvard COVID-19 Safety Program
  4. Contact a member of the HCBI Training Staff so they can help you find the best microscope for your project and correctly prepare your samples
  5. Using SPINAL, reserve the same block of time on the microscope you are interested as well as on your trainer's calendar
    • You will need to add an expense code for every microscope you will be using (Connor Crowley can help with this)
    • If the trainer is unavailable during that block of time, then you cannot reserve the machine
  6. Work with the HCBI to continue doing work as needed
